    Description

    The
    Space Mail Letter
from the International Space Station regarded to Expedition 28 and Expedition 29 missions. The letter was written by Russian
    cosmonaut Sergey Volkov
to his friend and was delivered to Earth by the Russian
    “SoyuzTMA-21” spacecraft
    named “
    Yuri Gagarin
    ”.
It was for the first time in the history of the Soviet/Russian cosmonautic when the piloted spacecraft received its own name – Yuri Gagarin.
On board the ISS, the letter was marked with the following seals: the “
Russian Post. Board of ISS. Russian Segment
” board post mark and the
“Russian Segment of International Space Station”
board souvenir seal both dated September 16, 2011, the day when the Russian “
    SoyuzTMA-21
” spacecraft undocked from the ISS, as well as with the “
    ISS
    ” octagonal board souvenir seal.
    During that mission, cosmonaut
    Sergey Volkov
worked on board the ISS since June 10 till November 22, 2011.
So, this letter is a real document of the “Space – Earth” postal communication. The personal letter written by a cosmonaut in space is a rather rare item.
Sender’s address in the left top corner of the envelope was handwritten by cosmonaut
    Sergey Volkov
    : “
Sergey Volkov. The Board of the ISS
    .”
The note in the middle upper part of the envelope written by cosmonaut
    Sergey Volkov
    says: “
It’s sent to Erath by the “Y.Gagarin” Soyuz TMA-21
    ”.
For writing the handwritten message, cosmonaut
    Sergey Volkov
used the clear side of the printed service radiogram with the detailed morning timetable for each ISS’s crew-member on September 1, 2011.
    The letter says: “
Igor, good day. I am sending this letter with the guys. I hope that the new landing date will be in force and everything will be successful. It seems to me that the rest will be in according to the plan. Good luck. Sergey Volkov.”
Having been delivered to Earth, on 5 November 2011 (Zvyozdny gorodok post mark) the letter was sent by registered mail (tracking number: 141160 43 00206 2) to Moscow (10.11.11 Moscow 101000 postmark).
